Bre O’Brien
Bre O’Brien is the author of several fantasy novels and short stories. She focuses on the middle ground of writing, places where the medical meets the magical, the possible meets the impossible, and the real meets the unreal.
She’s been a longtime collector of unlikely book boyfriends- starting with Frodo Baggins when she was 10. In middle and high school, she wrote her crushes down on paper as the love interests with overly complicated names. Every night before going to bed, she’d tell herself a bedtime story of romantic couples and magical places to drift off to sleep.
As a recent graduate of Southern New Hampshire University with a bachelor’s in English and Creative Writing, and a current student in the MFA program at SNHU, she loves to find new ways to play with all aspects of story. She works as a nurse in a juvenile detention center where there is no shortage of stories.
Every story deserves to be told no matter how heartbreaking or strange.
Bre lives on the Central Coast of California with her husband where they spend every other weekend going on fun adventures throughout the state.

Camp NaNoWriMo is in full swing. I set my goal for 25K and told myself I would write every single day this month. Well, on July 10th, I hit 25K. I hit 25K in 10 days, and there’s still 21 days left in July. So I have now increased my goal to 60K for July…

Failure is something that can happen to any of us at any time. Failure is something that we all try to actively avoid, failing, being a failure, is something that we don’t ever really want to admit. Failure sucks, but it’s a part of life. Lately, I’ve felt like a failure in several aspects. I’ve…

Even as the best of writers, we all have busy lives. The kids need to be taken care of, bills need to be paid, and most of us have other hobbies other than writing. And let’s not forget the unexpected things that come up and take precedent over writing. Lately, I have been very guilty…

I have been working on a novel and its series for nearly eight years now. Several of them have had outlines and several of them haven’t. All of them have been started during National Novel Writing Month and a few of them have been finished. Why am I telling you about my projects in a…

Yes, you are reading that correctly. Just three sentences. Life is busy for most writers. We have day jobs, kids, pets, outside life to deal with once we leave the page. Several things interrupt us from our stories and as more days pass it becomes more difficult to get back into the story. We also…

Sometimes, I turn into a monster. I catch a glimpse, And I don’t recognize myself, With those fangs, Those glowing eyes, Or the talons that curl forth into the darkness. But being a monster has its uses. The fangs to bite back any remarks that could hurt too much. The glowing eyes to see through…

I walk the path in sunlight, Nature singing it’s sweet song all around me, Cradling me in her arms, As all else melts away. Here, There is no frustration, No let down, Or sadness. Here, There is me, My feet on the path. Nature, Singing me to peace.

I’m taking them back. All the times I cried for you, All the times you made me cry. I’m taking it all back. The joy, the pain, the fury. You thought my anger was the worst You could face? Welcome to my apathy.

Creativity, The elusive creature, The one that comes in the dark of night, And the bright mornings, When I have other things to do. Eventually, I will set a trap and catch you. Eventually, I will pick up a pen, And start writing.

Sometimes, I set goals, And something slips, And I forget. Sometimes, Daily becomes weekly, Or monthly, Or never. Sometimes, I prove myself wrong, And work though the failure.

Most days, I feel like I’m floating away. Like I’m dissolving into nothing. Like the air is being sucked from my lungs. Like everything is pulling me apart, Piece by piece. Like everything I’m working on, Working toward, is just floating away. Everything is floating further away, The longer I reach for it. All I’m…

Gingerly, I awaken, Unaware of the time or place. For that split second, everything is still ok. Then the reality sets in, And the world burdens me, With the “to do”s and the “need to”s, The “urgent”s and the “should have”s from yesterday. Before those get too great, I pour a cup of coffee, And…

“Where do you see yourself in five years?” Why do interviewers always ask this question? Why don’t they ask “a year from now?” Or what about “three years from now?” Three years ago, give or take, I was a fresh nurse, Interviewing for work to further my career. They asked me that question, and I…

My bed is warm and comfortable, A comfort in the cold mornings. The world is cold and a traitor, Pulling me forth with promises of greatness, Only to pull them away, And replace them with doubt. Still, I rise. I face the challenges of the day, I fight against the odds, And hope for greatness…

Remember the word “forget”. Forget when things were bad, Forget those happy moments. Forget what hurts, Forget what healed. Forget her, Remember me, As I will always remember you.
